4:9. யூதர்கள் சமாரியருடனே சம்பந்தங்கலவாதவர்களானபடியால், சமாரியா ஸ்திரீ அவரை நோக்கி: நீர் யூதனாயிருக்க, சமாரியா ஸ்திரீயாகிய என்னிடத்தில், தாகத்துக்குத் தா என்று எப்படிக் கேட்கலாம் என்றாள்.

4:9. குடிப்பதற்கு நீங்கள் என்னிடம் கேட்பதை எண்ணி எனக்கு ஆச்சரியமாக உள்ளது. நீங்கள் ஒரு யூதர். நானோ சமாரியப் பெண் என்று அவள் பதிலுரைத்தாள். (ஏனென்றால் யூதர்கள் சமாரியர்களோடு எப்பொழுதும் நட்புடன் இருப்பதில்லை.)

4:9. So the Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you— a Jew— ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)

4:9. The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?"
